Manchester-based UrbanChain has been recognised as the third fastest-growing private technology company in Britain by The Sunday Times. The inaugural Sunday Times 100 Tech league table was published and features an equal distribution of software and hardware companies.
The company is among 17 firms in the rankings that were established, led, or co-founded by women. Specifically, UrbanChain ranked third among 50 software companies with an annual growth rate of 334.39% and fourth overall in the complete 100-company list.
Somayeh Taheri, Founder and Chief Executive, expressed the significance of this recognition: “To be recognised by one of the world’s leading news publishers is a significant moment for UrbanChain.” She reflected on prior coverage from The Times in September 2021 and noted the company’s substantial progress since then.
UrbanChain achieved 10x revenue growth, reaching £25 million in 2024. The Sunday Times 100 Tech noted that UrbanChain was among only four companies profitable within the software top 10.
The company operates a marketplace matching renewable energy generators with consumers on a half-hourly basis, serving private companies, office buildings, industrial sites, local government, and hospitals. The firm secured an Ofgem licence to supply electricity to non-domestic customers and plans US and Ireland launches this year, while currently raising approximately £50 million with £10.5 million already secured.
Company founders and directors will attend an invitation-only networking dinner on April 3 at The Londoner in Leicester Square, London.
